Yahoo Adware is adware that displays popups consisting of content similar to “Your version of Yahoo provided search is out of date” These are social engineering attacks that display fake alerts stating that “Your version of Yahoo provided search is out of date”. However if the “OK” button is clicked, rather than downloading an update, a browser hijacker will be installed.

This pop-up ad is usually caused by adware installed on the computer. These adware programs are bundled with other free software that is downloaded from the Internet. Unfortunately, some free downloads do not adequately disclose that other software will also be installed and it may be found that some adware has been installed without the user's knowledge or consent.

Once this malicious program is installed, the user's web browser will redirect to sites that display a “Your version of Yahoo provided search is out of date” message. This bogus alert is shown in such a way as to trick the user into thinking that they need to install an update, with the sole purpose of making them download the malicious program. These “Your version of Yahoo provided search is out of date” messages are aimed to promote the installation of additional malware and adware, including web browser toolbars, rogue optimization utilities and other products, all so the adware publisher can generate pay-per-click revenue.

The message shown on the pop-up ad is:

"Automatic Update: Your version of Yahoo provided search is out of date. There is a newer and improved version available with the fresh and intuitive Chromium browser. Set Bing search as my default search, homepage and newtabs homepage on all of my compatible browser. Install Chromium browser as my default browser By clicking “OK” you agree to install Chromium browser as your default browser and your choices above and have read and agree to Bing EULA and Privacy Policy and the Chromium Terms and Privacy Policy."
