Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware is an antivirus and antispyware product for Microsoft Windows. It is the upgraded and rebranded version of the previous Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus with an added firewall protection feature.
Launched in October 2007, Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware with firewall protects against security threats including trojans, keyloggers, viruses, hackers, data theft, and rootkits. The antispyware component is powered by the original Spy Sweeper technology to protect users against spyware, adware, popups and any other privacy threats. As of 2012, the antivirus has been discontinued.
Although originally designed as a standalone product, Webroot Desktop Firewall component was added to the product when it was re-launched in October 2007. Webroot Desktop Firewall is designed to fill in the gaps in the Windows defense system, which commonly has vulnerabilities that allow hackers to gain unauthorized access to users’ PCs. This feature cloaks the IP address of the computer and monitors Internet traffic coming in and out of the PC. Using multi-layer intrusion prevention technology, the software blocks intrusions by using a desktop firewall, port manager, URL filter, process monitor, and application/system anomaly detection. The smart configuration feature built into this element of the software “learns” the habits of the user and defines rules based on those habitual activities, setting the security accordingly.
The virus definition database is powered by Webroot’s patented and automated spyware research system called Phileas.
E-mail monitoring performs a scan on all inbound and outbound e-mails for evidence of hijacked accounts. All e-mail attachments are also checked for malicious content and then reported to the user.
This feature allows users to defer alerts, updates and any other activities while still maintaining the background protection shields so that their game or movie is not interrupted.
