Protegent Antivirus is an antivirus and depending on the user's definition, a possible PUP that runs on Microsoft Windows. Protegent's status as malicious software is unlikely as evidence is lacking; it detects both malware (such as MEMZ and 000.exe as shown here) and safe programs, though those are likely accidental false positives. Additionally, Protegent does not appear to harm the computer, nor are their reports of it installing without the user's permission.

The antivirus' name is derived from the French verb "protéger", which means "To Protect".

Recognition

Unistal Software was founded in 1994, while the earliest mentions of Protegent date back to 2007.

It has become an internet meme due to the poor quality and bizarre nature of its advertisements, which was primarily popularized by the popular YouTuber and Twitch streamer Vinesauce Joel's "Windows Vista Destruction" video. Its mascot is a slightly altered orange version of Whyatt Beanstalk, the main character of the children's television show Super Why!. The advertisements for Protegent are known for their rather shoddy grammar, but this might be due to differences between Indian and American/British English.

Protegent also has fake reviews claiming to be from users in English-speaking countries, despite the reviews being written in poor English, and claims to be able to protect from the infamous ransomware WannaCry which was proven false by the malware YouTuber Siam Alam.
